I have used a sponge to apply foundation before but I haven't used one of these brushes.The sponge I found did not give an even coverage & felt rough on my skin. I have used the brush to apply liquid and mineral foundation and found it to give an overall even coverage. The bristles are soft on my skin like a mini massage & the bristles do not shed. I would highly recommending purchasing this brush much better than using a sponge.
